                                                -FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE-

No Square Theatre Announces a 2012 Season of "Schlock and Awe"

20th Anniversary "LAGUNATICS" Caps a Year of Musical Events
Laguna Beach CA, January 8, 2012: The 15th season of No Square Theatre — Laguna's community theater since 1997 — marks the 20th anniversary of its flagship production, LAGUNATICS. The musical parody "Roast of the Coast" will celebrate 20 years of "schlock and awe" with a "best of" retrospective at the Forum Theater in October.

Created in 1992 by Bree Burgess Rosen, who co-founded No Square in 1997, LAGUNATICS has been spoofing a city that never lacks for material, whether it's armies of goats, mobs of tourists, meter maids, massive sewage spills, the ravages of over-privilege, the Toll Road, the fate of the hospital and the Boom Boom Room, or City Council hijinks (as often as not performed by members of the Council).

Since its inception, LAGUNATICS has also raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for local nonprofits, including the Laguna Playhouse, Laguna Shanti, Laguna Beach Seniors, the Community Clinic, the Artists Theatre and others.

LAGUNATOTS, the love child of LAGUNATICS, also returns to No Square Theatre in their small performance space at historic Legion Hall in May for six performances.

No Square's 2012 season begins at No Square Theatre on February 3 and 4 with a reading of MY FUNNY VALENTINE, a "new" musical written by Chris Quilter, co-writer of LAGUNATICS. The script, which sat in his "drawer of dust-covered dreams" for years, incorporates the music of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart and is an ideal fit for the company's latest project: the Great American Songbooks. These cabaret-style concerts survey the timeless work of composers and lyricists such as Frank Loesser, George and Ira Gershwin, and Irving Berlin. MY FUNNY VALENTINE is directed by Joe Lauderdale, music directed by Roxanna Ward, and features some of the company's top vocal talent, including Steve McIntosh, Natalie Powers, and Bree Burgess Rosen.

In July, No Square returns to the Artists Theatre for a midsummer family musical. The search continues for the perfect summer show — a considerable challenge when previous productions have included BABES IN ARM, HONK, JUST SO, ROCKY HORROR SHOW, XANADU, and GYPSY.

In addition to these productions, No Square continues its Local Vocals Open Mic Nights, Square Roots Kids Chorus, and Broadway summer camp for kids. "We want No Square to be the place where talented amateur performers of all ages can gain experience, be challenged, and have fun," says Bree Burgess Rosen, who serves as the company's artistic director.

No Square is engaged in a slow-but-steady renovation of its rehearsal and performance space in Legion Hall, where it moved in 2009. The focus to date has been on essential functional enhancements such as lights, sound, and air-conditioning. No Square is working with the American Legion and the City, which operates the space for the Legion, to transform the interior of No Square Theatre into a jewel box space that honors its history as the town's original schoolhouse. The company expects to invest $50,000 in the project by its completion in late 2012.
