Overview
Music & Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by George Furth
Friendship. Ambition. Success. Regret.
Told in reverse chronological order, Merrily We Roll Along traces the lives of composer Franklin Shepard and his two closest freinds, Mary Flynn and Charley Kringas as they journey backward through two decades of triumphs, heartbreaks, and difficult choices. As the story unfolds in reverse, audiences discover how youthful dreams gradually gave way to fame, compromise, and the complexities of adult life, revealing the moments that shaped three lifelong friends.
Featuring one of Stephen Sondheim's most beloved scores, including "Old Friends", "Not a Day Goes By", and "Our Time", Merrily We Roll Along is a poignant and ultimately hopeful reflection on friendship, artistic ambition, and the paths we choose.
Though its original 1981 Broadway run was famously short-lived, Merrily We Roll Along has become one of Sondheim's most celebrated works through decades of acclaimed revivals, culminating in the 2023 - 2024 Broadway production that won the Tony Award for Best Revival of a Musical. Today it is widely regarded as a modern musical theatre masterpiece.
“One of Sondheim's riches and most emotionally satisfying musicals." - The New York Times
“A masterpiece, at last." - The Washington Post
“A triumphant revival of a misunderstood classic." - Variety
